So in part 1, 'Are you Having a Spiritual Awakening', of this 3-part series, I talked about how to understand the spiritual awakening, and asked could you experience such an awakening as the ones I described from Martinus’ book, and also Carol Bowman’s book.
I also talked about my spiritual awakening, and what triggers such an awakening. Now, if you’ve read that post, and you’ve experienced any of those that I described, let’s see if you can connect some more dots here!
In this post I'll cover:
1. 22 Signs You Could be Having a Spiritual Awakening - these are very common.
2. How Long Does a Spiritual Awakening Take?
3. 12 Essential Tips for your Spiritual Journey.
And in Part 3, I'll be covering the Challenges You Might Face on your Spiritual Journey, but I've got your back, and some great suggestions to help you overcome those challenges.
Now, let's get cracking on this! Whilst the spiritual awakening can come upon you quite unbidden, there are some common signs that could indicate you are on the brink of your awakening.
1. Heightened Sensitivity and Awareness: Increased intuition, being more in tune with nature, and empathy toward others.
2. Feeling disconnected or detached: Everything can take on a surreal quality, so that you don’t feel connected to the people around you or things you used to enjoy.
3. Death of the Ego: Beginning to realise that your ego and your ‘true self’ are not one and the same.
4. Feelings of profound clarity: A realisation that you've been living in a somewhat unreal world.
5. Overwhelming Feelings of Love: Experiences of profound divine love and connection.
6. Questioning your long-held beliefs: You question beliefs you've held for years, as I did with religion.
7. Lucid or Vivid Dreams: Conscious awareness within dreams or dreams with spiritual significance.
8. Synchronicities: Meaningful coincidences that seem orchestrated by a higher intelligence.
9. Déjà Vu Experiences: Familiar feelings about new situations or environments.
10. Relationships Changes or Challenges: See part 2 of this article!
11. Profound Peace and Calm: Deep inner tranquility beyond ordinary relaxation.
12. Disillusionment: Feeling as if conventional reality is dreamlike or losing interest in previously important pursuits.
13. Loneliness: Difficulty connecting with others who haven't had similar experiences.
14. Disconnection from Worldly Concerns: Decreased attachment to material things and increased interest in spiritual fulfilment.
15. Temporary Superiority Complex: Judging others or feeling more 'enlightened' - which, unless you quickly move past it, will derail you very quickly because true spiritual enlightenment means accepting everybody – and accepting that they are on their own spiritual journey – judgement has no place in true spirituality. Think of some of those spiritual 'guru' cult leaders... they all had 'God Complex' syndrome! Not good! I actually watched a couple of YouTube videos recently about such leaders, and there's one in Australia and one in Siberia who are procliming to be Jesus. The sad thing is, tens of 1000s of people believe them and follow them. I can't help but wonder what would happen if someone got both these Jesus figures into the same room. Enough said!
16. Feeling a Deep Desire to Serve: You may find you want to help in a more profound way than before, and this could be with people, animals or the environment. My personal experience was that I became a vegetarian as I’ve mentioned, and decided to train as a therapist.
17. Your Teachers Find You: Or you find them! They don’t have to necessarily be ‘gurus’, but you’ll start to find people whose ideas resonate with you. I was always searching for deeper spiritual knowledge, and read SO many books - starting with David Icke's Truth Vibrations and Shirley MacLaine's Out on a Limb back in the day. I have since read all the 'big' names in the spirtual and self help word, including Seth Speaks, Abraham Hicks (who I still love), Neale Donald Walsch, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, and more, but it wasn't until I found Death Is An Illusion by Else Byskov that I knew I'd found REAL answers, and insights that couldn't be found anywhere else. But you have to search and find what resonates with you.
18. You Feel More Connected to Nature: This is one of the most common ones my clients find always happen. Whether it’s walking in the woods, or taking a stroll on the beach, or being near a body of water, you can find yourself craving to be in nature.
19. If You’re Not Already an Empath or Highly Sensitive Person, you can find yourself become more empathic, sensitive and attuned to the present moment, and this could show up in heightened sensitivity to physical, emotional or energetic stimuli.
20. Physical Symptoms: You might feel more tired, not sleep well, feel confusion or ‘brain fog’, but as long as you check with your doctor and know there’s not medical reasons, don’t worry too much, as these will pass.
21. Change in Habits: You might decide to change your diet to a healthier one, lose weight, clear your clutter, take up a hobby or start a new exercise routine, and you'll certainly want to learn more about spirituality because it will now have a very personal meaning for you.
22. Deep Feeling of Knowing: In spite of all the challenges you might face during your spiritual awakening, you have an unshakeable knowing that this is the right path for you.
All of these experiences are the Universe's way of nudging you towards your destiny. Now you're probably not going to experience ALL of them all at once, but do pay attention if any of these things are happening to you, because it's very likely they are clear signs that you're on a spiritual awakening path.
Your spiritual awakening journey isn't a straight path with a clear endpoint. As I mentioned earlier, your spiritual journey goes on forever! The more you learn, the more you realise you still have to learn. But then, knowing that is also part of your journey!
You might experience this transformation over months, years, or even decades, as I have. Your journey is uniquely personal, and its duration varies significantly based on your individual circumstances.
Martinus spent 60 years writing and developing his spiritual insights after his initial awakening experience! While your journey might not span decades of writing spiritual texts, it will unfold in its own perfect timing.
You may move through different phases at varying speeds, experiencing intense periods of growth followed by periods of integration. During these integration phases, you'll have time to process new insights and incorporate them into your daily life. Then you might find yourself in a period of stagnation, where you simply can’t read another spiritual book, listen to another spiritual podcast, or you might even reject the whole ‘spiritual thing’. And all that would be perfectly fine, because you have to do what feels right for you in the moment.
You’ll come back when you’re ready, because once the spiritual awakening starts, there is no turning back.
12 Essential Tips for your Spiritual Journey
As you delve deeper into your spiritual exploration, you'll naturally feel drawn to learning more, healing psychological wounds, and integrating new insights. This phase of your journey is deeply transformative, and it often involves the following:
1. Seek Healing and Guidance
You might find it helpful to seek support through therapy, spiritual guidance, or coaching. If you'd like, feel free to reach out and book an appointment with me. This can help you heal and gain clarity as you progress.
2. Clear Negative Thought Patterns
Engage in practices that help clear negative thought patterns, such as therapy or spiritual guidance. This will support your transformation, allowing you to release limiting beliefs and embrace new, positive perspectives.
3. Create Space for Divine Wisdom
Meditation is key in making room for divine wisdom to flow into your life. By incorporating regular meditation practices, you allow your higher self to guide you and enhance your spiritual awareness.
4. Integrate Spiritual Insights into Your Everyday Life
It's crucial to work on embodying your spiritual insights in your day-to-day life. Practicing mindfulness, for example, can help you remain aware and present in every moment, integrating your spiritual growth into your daily activities.
5. Develop New Habits Aligned with Your Expanded Awareness
As your awareness expands, you may feel inspired to make lifestyle changes. This could involve becoming a vegetarian, cutting out alcohol, getting fit, or taking up a new hobby. It’s a personal journey, and only you can know what feels right.
The point is, you will almost certainly want or need to change some things, so be curious about what might show up for you, and trust your intuition as you make these decisions.
6. Trust the Process and trust YOURSELF
Disorientation and questioning are normal parts of the growth process. Trust yourself—you are on the right path. Your higher self and higher power know you are ready for this stage in your spiritual journey.
7. Seek Community
It’s helpful to connect with others who are on a similar spiritual path. Sharing experiences with like-minded individuals can provide support and insight. However, be cautious, as not all groups are as spiritually aligned as they might initially appear. Join some groups and follow them for a while, to check out the vibe. I’ve been in some supposedly ‘spiritual’ groups that were toxic waste grounds!
8. Balance Seeking with Grounding Practices
As you explore expanded awareness, it’s important to stay grounded. Practices like standing barefoot on grass or sand—anything that connects you with the earth—can help. Breathing deeply and "inhaling" the earth’s energy will keep you rooted.
Remember, grounding is a regular practice! One time won't cut it—during the summer in Spain, I’m always barefoot unless I have to go out – I find I actually crave the feeling of having my bare feet on the ground!
9. Use White Light Protection and Call on Angelic Guidance
I use white light protection in all my sessions, and I’ve been using it myself since learning it from a psychic medium many years ago. To practice, simply call down white light from the source, letting it enter your head at the crown chakra. Allow the light to fill you up and expand to cover your entire aura. Once visualized, zip up your auric field and consider yourself protected within this bubble of white light. During this practice, call on your guardian angels for assistance. They are there to help you on your spiritual journey.
If you're not sure that you have Guardian Angels, then allow me to direct you to read Else's blog post, Our Guardian Angels here, which should give you the reassurance you need that we do indeed have Guardian Angels.
10. Pray for Guidance and Support
Praying to your higher power for ongoing support and guidance is another essential practice. Remember, you're never alone on this journey—ask for help when needed. If you'd like to understand more about how powerful prayer really is, read Else's Post, Does Prayer Work? Can it help us in time's of need?
11. Journal Your Spiritual Awakening
Journaling is a favourite practice for many of my clients. Not only is it useful for reflecting on our work together, but it's also invaluable for tracking your experiences during your spiritual awakening. Journaling helps you notice synchronicities and significant moments that might otherwise go unnoticed or be forgotten.
12. Keep These Practices to Yourself
Unless you're in the company of people who 'get it', don't share these practices with others because if they don't get it, they'll likely think you've lost the plot, or they'll think you've gone all 'woo woo'. Seriously, I'd have so many people roll their eyes at me in the past and call me a 'tree hugger', but my spiritual skin has grown very thick since then and I really don't care now what people think.
Also, let me just say don't expect to do ALL these things at once (except for the White Light! I inisist you do that lol! Actually I have a lovely short meditation that I recorded for that. I need to find time to upload it here, but if you'd like it, you're welcome to email me at maria@mariamcmahon.com and I'll gladly send you a copy. Just pick the ones for now that make good sense to you, and do those. Over time, they'll become second nature and you'll be able to then explore others.
When you're just starting out, it can be overwhelming, and it can be shaky gound for you. But don't worry, in Part 3 of this series, I'm going to cover the challenges you're likely to face and what you can do to deal with them.
