Unlocking the Mystery of Consciousness

The question ‘What is consciousness?’, is one of the most-often pondered questions in the universe. It was long believed that consciousness was housed in the brain, and once the brain died, you died, and that was the end of your consciousness. So who you are, was all locked up in your brain. But is it really? Is that all you are?

Who are you, really?

More and more people are realising that there has to be more to it than this, and it's something I've been pondering myself for over 30 years! However, a few years ago, I had the good fortune to come across the work of an absolutely brilliant spiritual mind that left me in no doubt whatsoever, that there most certainly is a whole lot more to us than our brains and these clunky bodies we're walking around in.

In this section of the website, I will be sharing lots of insights from the astonishing work of the Danish mystic Martinus, drawn from the work of my good friend and co-author of three books in our ‘Spiritual Nutshell’ Series about Martinus’ work, Danish author Else Byskov, who has written multiple books in English about his work. Many of her books have also been translated into Spanish & German.

But let me start with a short introduction to who this mystic is, because unless you live in Scandinavia, you are unlikely to have heard of him. Which is a great pity, because the spiritual insights and wisdom he has to offer us through his enormous body of work, are frankly, second to none – and I have been reading spiritual books for over 30 years, so I’ve read a LOT of them.

Martinus Thomsen, The Danish Mystic

Martinus Thomsen, known simply as Martinus, was a Danish mystic whose life and teachings are truly extraordinary. Born out of wedlock in 1890, in North Jutland, Martinus grew up in very humble surroundings, and had only a very rudimentary education. Despite his humble beginnings, his writings reveal a profound depth of insight and spiritual wisdom that is an extraordinary gift to mankind.

This ability to write with astonishing depth and unheard of spiritual wisdom and concepts, came about when he was aged 30, when, during a meditation experiment, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening, opening his consciousness to the spiritual dimensions of existence, wherein he achieved cosmic consciousness. This led Martinus to devote himself to writing, producing over 10,000 pages of deeply insightful work and 100 symbolic illustrations over a span of 60 years, until his death in 1981 at age 90.

His primary work, "Livets Bog" (The Book of Life), is a comprehensive exploration of spiritual evolution and the purpose of life, comprising seven volumes. He also wrote multiple articles, shorter books, and regularly gave lectures during his lifetime.

While Martinus' work is not widely known beyond Scandinavia, my aim is to bring his spiritual wisdom to a broader audience by sharing some of his insights with you.

The Martinus Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark (www.martinus.dk) is dedicated to preserving and sharing his teachings. It's important to note that the institute is not a cult or organization, (there is nothing to ‘join’); instead, it is a resource open to anyone seeking spiritual understanding. Much of his work has already been translated into English, making it accessible to a global audience eager to explore his vision of a universe grounded in love and interconnectedness.

There is also The Martinus Centre in Klint, and though Martinus' main residence was in Copenhagen, he also had a house here where he could work. It is an idyllic setting, overlooking the ocean, and I had the pleasure of visiting there with Else a few summers ago, to study his work in more detail. I even got to sit on his bench, where he would sit and meditate as he looked out at the ocean.

My Introduction to Martinus's Work

I was introduced to his work when my Chiropractor mentioned a book, Death is an Illusion, by Danish author Else Byskov. He raved about the book so I thought, I must get it. I soon discovered that Else lived less than an hour’s drive from where I live in Spain, and we arranged to meet. We became fast friends, and eventually we co-authored the Nutshell series of books, which I will link to below.

If you're curious about the true nature of consciousness, Martinus' spiritual science might just hold the key for you, as it did for me, and for Else.

Unlike traditional science, which sticks to what can be seen and touched, spiritual science dives deeper, exploring the spiritual realm where everything begins.

Sticking to just the physical world means missing out on the bigger picture of what consciousness really is. The problem with science and spirituality is that science just hasn't yet been able to prove the existence of consciousness, and if it can't be seen, weighed, measured or somehow scientifically quantified, then science decrees that it doesn't exist. But science only knows so much, and whilst knowledge is ever-evolving and growing, the day is yet to come when science actually catches up and realises that we're all energy, and we're all immortal.

Consciousness: There's More to This Than Meets the Eye

In today's world, most people believe they're just their physical bodies and that everything ends when the body dies. But here's the kicker: we are not our bodies. What truly defines us is our consciousness—a vibrant energy field that extends beyond the brain and forms our aura. It's time to rethink the mainstream view and embrace a broader understanding.

Energy: It's Eternal and Everlasting

Energy, by its nature, can't be created or destroyed. The concept of the law of conservation of energy is a fundamental principle in physics, which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another. So it’s logical to assume that if we’re made of energy, we can’t be destroyed – but we can be transformed.

Spiritual science suggests that our consciousness persists even after our physical bodies are no longer useful – or to put it bluntly, dead! Near-death experiences – told with ever-increasing frequency now by those who have experienced them - abound with stories of their consciousness observing from above, as they float above their dead bodies – whilst they are simultaneously engaging with a realm of beauty and light beyond anything ‘earthly’ - before returning to their body. These experiences offer a glimpse into the enduring nature of our consciousness.

The Aura: Is A Window to the Soul

Our aura reflects the energy field that surrounds us, mirroring our consciousness, - ie, a collection of thoughts and ideas. Thoughts are like coins, with two sides: energy and information. When consciousness departs, the body, like an unplugged appliance, ceases to function, yet consciousness continues its journey, awaiting reincarnation. And we reincarnate multiple times during the journey of our soul from darkness back to light.

Our aura's energy field vibrates with electric waves, creating a magnetism that influences what we draw into our lives. The law of attraction teaches that like attracts like. The quality of our thoughts—loving or hateful—shapes our vibrations and, in turn, our life experiences, from friendships to health and happiness.

Consciousness: The Soul's True Identity

Our aura encapsulates the essence of what many have traditionally called the soul. It's an ever-present field around the body, a testament to the vibrancy and continuity of our true selves. To grow spiritually, we need to embrace this understanding and nurture our consciousness with positive, loving thoughts – and those loving thoughts, I’d like to add, should be for ourselves, and for everyone we encounter in our lives. I know – that’s not always an easy task!

Realizing We're More Than Just Flesh and Bone

We've made huge strides in understanding that we are far more than our physical bodies. Imagine this: our consciousness is the software, and our physical body is just the hardware. Just like a computer needs software to function, our body is nothing without our consciousness. And just as a computer can be trashed while the software remains, our consciousness outlasts our physical form, living on as an eternal entity. This consciousness is what many have traditionally called the soul.

What's Inside Our Consciousness?

Our consciousness is a treasure trove of information about who we are, stored in intricate wave patterns. At its heart is our sense of self, or "I." Even the most skeptical scientists, who might claim we're just our brains, can't help but use the word "I" daily—because that's the core of our being.

Everything that defines us—our thoughts, memories, intelligence, character, emotions, and more—resides in our consciousness. It's a rich tapestry woven from countless experiences and lessons learned over many lifetimes. Each life adds new threads, making us wiser and more compassionate with each reincarnation.

Proof of Past Lives

The idea that our consciousness holds past life memories isn't just speculation. Hypnosis and regression therapy have shown that people can access memories from previous lives, leading to incredible healing by confronting past traumas. Researchers like Michael Newton and Richard Martini have documented these phenomena extensively, leaving little doubt that our supra-consciousness is a reservoir of past life memories. There are also ground-breaking books such as ‘Many Lives, Many Masters by Dr Brian Weiss that I recommend you read if this subject fascinates you.

Even if you doubt it, or simply don’t believe in past lives, that’s fine, but it won’t change a thing! You might go to your grave believing in nothing beyond this physical life, but as I always say to sceptics – there’s one heck of a surprise waiting for you on the other side!

But it’s ok if you don’t believe, because that’s just where you happen to be in your journey. However, if you really want to dig into this more, and start looking at the logic of it, then I definitely recommend reading more of Else’s work, including her blog post here which inspired this one I’ve just written. There is SO much more to learn, and think about, and I’ll definitely be writing more about these concepts soon.
